The Ask

Create a digital presence that mirrors a heavenly in-person dining experience.

Xero Degree is a café and dining brand founded in 2018 by Kashish Aneja and Shivam Kakkar, built around a single premise: an escape from your busy life. The brand operates exclusively under Xero Degrees Cafe Private Limited, encompassing both the Xero Degrees and Xero Courtyard concepts. The in-person experience was described by the brand itself as heavenly — the digital presence needed to match it.

For a food and café brand, the digital experience is the first taste. A prospective customer encountering Xero Degree online makes an immediate and largely unconscious judgement about the quality of the food based entirely on what they see and feel on screen. A generic, template-driven food website communicates, implicitly, that the food and the experience are equally ordinary. That was the problem to solve — across both a website and a mobile application.

02 — Challenge

The Digital Experience Is the First Taste

Making a customer feel hungry within two seconds of landing on a screen — across a website and a mobile app.

Xero Degree's brief was unambiguous: create a digital presence that makes food look appetising, makes the brand feel warm and considered, and makes ordering or visiting feel effortless and inviting. The deliverables covered both the website and a mobile application — requiring a coherent design system that worked across both platforms without losing its appetite-stimulating quality at either scale.

The underlying challenge was not just aesthetics. A disconnected digital presence — one that failed to carry the warmth, the visual quality, and the personality of the physical café — would actively undermine the brand. Every colour choice, every photograph's treatment, every whitespace decision either contributes to that feeling of escape or diminishes it. The design system had to make those decisions consistent and right across every screen, at every size.

03 — Approach

Building a Food-Tech Design System from the Ground Up

Four design phases. One coherent brand world across two platforms.

01
Visual Design System & Food-Tech Palette
  • High-contrast colour system built in Figma to stimulate appetite
  • Dual-red approach: crimson + coral-red creates visual depth
  • Mustard yellow accent for CTAs and warm emphasis
  • Near-black for text and dark-themed sections
02
Typography System — Source Sans Pro
  • Humanist sans-serif selected for hospitality register
  • Semi-bold for headers: warm confidence, not aggression
  • Regular weight for body: effortless, food-forward readability
  • Slightly warm letterforms over a colder tech typeface
03
UI Component Library — Appetite-Driven
  • Input fields: clean white, unobtrusive grey borders
  • Primary CTAs: solid mustard yellow, dark text, rounded corners
  • Secondary: ghost style with thin yellow border for hierarchy
  • Radio buttons & dropdowns kept clear and standard
04
Platform Design — Website & Mobile App
  • Homepage hero: signature dishes led by Big Bang Theory sliders
  • Card-based menu: high-res imagery, pricing, and Add CTA
  • Mobile: large touch targets, full-width food photography
  • Responsive: consistent palette and type at every screen size

A user landing on a food brand's website or opening their app should feel hungry within the first two seconds. Every colour choice, every photograph's treatment, every whitespace decision either contributes to that feeling — or diminishes it.

  • For a food and café brand like Xero Degree, UI/UX design covers the full digital experience: a visual design system (colour palette, typography, spacing), a UI component library (buttons, inputs, menus), homepage design with hero food imagery, menu and ordering pages, and mobile application design. The goal is a coherent brand world that works at every screen size and every touchpoint — from a customer browsing on desktop to ordering on their phone.
  • For food brands, the digital experience is the first taste. Customers make an immediate and largely unconscious judgement about the quality of the food and the experience based entirely on what they see on screen. A generic design communicates a generic product. A high-quality, appetite-stimulating visual system — the right colours, the right photography treatment, the right whitespace — signals that the food and the experience are equally premium.
  • The mobile application was designed mobile-first rather than as an adaptation of the desktop site. Key decisions included simplified navigation with large touch targets (for use on the go without precise tapping), full-width food photography scaled to maintain appetite-stimulating quality at small screen sizes, and consistent use of the Source Sans Pro typography and the red-yellow-dark palette from the website. The result was a seamless brand world across both platforms.
  • First Launch uses Figma as the primary design tool for UI/UX projects. Figma enables collaborative design systems — shared component libraries, consistent visual token management, and clean handoff to development — making it the industry standard for website and mobile application design at scale.
  • Yes. The visual design system built for Xero Degree — including the food-tech colour palette, typography system, and UI component library — is modular and scalable. As the brand expands to new concepts like Xero Courtyard or new digital touchpoints, the design system provides the foundation for consistent brand expression without starting from scratch each time.
  • Yes.
