About the Project
In 2019, First Launch undertook a full website rebrand — rethinking how the agency presented itself, its services, and its capabilities to a prospective client visiting firstlaunch.in for the first time. As part of that rebrand, the team created a series of custom illustrations designed specifically for the website: a visual language built from scratch to communicate the breadth and character of what First Launch does.
This case study documents that in-house creative work — a set of original illustrations that brought the agency’s service identity to life across the 2019 website, before subsequent website iterations moved to a different visual direction altogether.
The Brief
Agency websites have a particular communication challenge. A full-service digital marketing agency offers a wide range of services — web development, SEO, performance marketing, social media, branding, visual solutions, and more — and most websites attempt to communicate this range through a combination of service lists, icons, and generic stock photography. The result is almost universally the same: competent-looking, immediately forgettable, and indistinguishable from the next agency’s website.
The brief First Launch set for itself was more ambitious. Rather than using stock imagery or generic icon sets, the team would create an original series of custom illustrations — each one designed to communicate a specific service or capability in a way that was visually distinctive, characterful, and unmistakably First Launch. The illustrations needed to work together as a coherent visual system across the website while each one standing on its own as a clear, engaging representation of its subject.

The Approach
The illustration series was created entirely in Adobe Illustrator — built from scratch rather than adapted from existing assets or icon libraries. The visual style was developed to reflect the character of the agency itself: energetic, considered, and creative without being abstract or difficult to read.
The approach was scene-based rather than symbolic. Rather than reducing each service to an icon — a magnifying glass for SEO, a megaphone for social media — the illustrations built small visual worlds around each service area. This gave each piece narrative quality: something was happening in the frame, not just being represented by it. A viewer spending two seconds with a scene-based illustration understands more about what the service involves and how the team approaches it than they would from any icon, however well-designed.
The illustrations covered the full range of First Launch’s services and specialities — from digital marketing and performance-driven work to web development and visual solutions — creating a visual taxonomy of the agency’s capabilities that could be read as a complete picture when seen together or as individual pieces in context.
The colour palette, character design, and visual language were developed to be cohesive across the series — meaning that even though each illustration communicated a different subject, they all belonged recognisably to the same visual world. This system-level thinking ensured that the website as a whole felt designed rather than assembled.

- Each illustration designed to communicate a specific First Launch service or capability area
- Scene-based visual approach — characters, environments, and narrative moments rather than abstract symbols
- Coherent visual system across the full series — unified colour palette, character style, and illustration language
- Created entirely in Adobe Illustrator
Why Custom Illustration for an Agency Website
The decision to invest in original custom illustrations for a website rebrand rather than purchasing stock assets or using icon packs is a statement about how the agency sees its own work. A digital marketing agency that uses generic stock photography on its own website is implicitly demonstrating that it does not always practice what it preaches. A team that creates a custom illustration series for its own website is demonstrating craft, creative investment, and the willingness to do things properly even when the client is itself.
Custom website illustrations also age better and differentiate more effectively than stock imagery. They cannot be found on another agency’s website because they were made specifically for this one. They communicate a visual point of view — a way of seeing and representing the world — that a stock image never can.
For First Launch in 2019, the website illustration series was both a functional communication tool and a demonstration of the agency’s creative capability to every prospective client who landed on the site.
What This Work Demonstrates
First Launch applies the same creative standards to its own brand that it applies to clients. The 2019 website illustration series was a significant in-house creative investment — built to communicate the agency’s services clearly while demonstrating the quality of thinking and execution that a client could expect to bring to their own brand. It is the most direct proof of capability available: not a case study about a client project, but the agency’s own visual identity doing the work.
