About the Brand
Varam Herbals is a natural and herbal personal care brand offering plant-based, skin-friendly products for everyday health and hygiene. Their hand sanitizer is formulated with Aloe Vera, eliminating 99.9% of germs with a fast-absorbing gel that leaves no sticky residue while keeping hands soft and nourished. Built on the principle that effective hygiene does not require harsh chemistry, Varam Herbals positions its products at the intersection of clinical efficacy and natural formulation — gentle, herbal, and trusted for family use.
The Brief
This project was produced in October 2020 — in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, when hand sanitizer had gone from a niche hygiene product to a daily essential purchased by virtually every household and business in India. The market had flooded almost overnight with sanitizer brands at every price point and quality level, from pharmacy generics to premium formulations.
For Varam Herbals, this context created both an opportunity and a design challenge. The opportunity was significant consumer demand and a market actively looking for quality, trustworthy options. The challenge was differentiation: how do you design a hand sanitizer label that reads as genuinely premium when the category had been so rapidly commoditised, and when most competing products on the shelf were either clinically sterile in their packaging or making the same natural and herbal claims as Varam?
The brief was explicit: design a premium hand sanitizer label that emphasised quality and brand elegance — communicating that this was not a commodity product but a considered, quality formulation from a brand with a clear herbal identity.
The Approach
The word premium in the brief carried the full design weight of the project. In label design, premium is not a colour or a font — it is a set of decisions about proportion, restraint, finish, and hierarchy that together create the impression of quality before the consumer has read the ingredient list or the price.
For a natural and herbal brand, premium has a specific visual territory: it is not the cold, clinical premium of pharmaceutical packaging, and it is not the rustic, earthy premium of artisanal products. It is somewhere between them — elegant, clean, and ingredient-confident. The design needed to communicate that Varam’s sanitizer was a quality choice made deliberately, not a panic purchase from a flooded market.
First Launch approached the label design with the brand’s herbal identity and the premium positioning working together rather than separately. The Aloe Vera formulation — the brand’s key ingredient credential — was a natural design anchor, offering botanical visual reference without resorting to the generic leaf-and-drop motifs that saturated the natural personal care category at the time.
The label hierarchy was designed to do three things in sequence: first, establish the brand; second, communicate the premium herbal formulation; third, confirm the hygiene efficacy. This order was deliberate — for a brand building equity in a commoditised category, leading with brand and ingredient quality rather than the generic “kills 99.9% of germs” claim sets Varam apart from products that have nothing else to say.

The Context of This Project
It is worth noting that this label was designed in October 2020 — a moment when the hand sanitizer market in India had expanded dramatically due to the pandemic. The brands that used this moment purely to meet demand, without investing in how they presented themselves, missed a significant brand-building opportunity. The consumers who discovered Varam Herbals during this period were looking for quality and trust, not just availability. A premium label was not cosmetic — it was the difference between a one-time pandemic purchase and a customer who continued buying the brand once the market normalised.
What This Work Demonstrates
Label design for a premium natural product in a commoditised category requires a clear understanding of what premium means in that specific context — and the design discipline to execute it without over-designing. First Launch’s work for Varam Herbals’ hand sanitizer demonstrates the ability to take a brand identity, a product ingredient story, and a premium positioning brief, and resolve them into a label that communicates all three simultaneously in the compressed visual space that product packaging allows.
