The Energy Drink Label Design That Commands the Shelf

Electron needed more than a label. It needed a predatory brand identity — from logo ideation through colour variants to shelf-ready can artwork — built to dominate one of the most visually aggressive categories in consumer goods.

5 Creative Phases
1 Brand Identity
01 — Brief

A challenger brand in the most competitive shelf in FMCG

The label wasn't packaging — it was Electron's primary brand communication vehicle.

The energy drink category is one of the most visually aggressive shelves in consumer goods. Brands compete for attention measured in fractions of a second — and the packaging that wins does so by being immediately legible, emotionally charged, and visually unmistakable. For Electron, a challenger brand built around a single positioning idea — power that doesn't quit — the label was not packaging. It was the brand.

Electron's proposition set it apart from category defaults: not clinical efficacy claims or extreme-sport associations, but sustained buzz throughout the day. The brief asked First Launch to develop a complete brand identity and label design that expressed this positioning — vibrant and eye-catching enough to hold its own against established names, while establishing Electron's own distinct visual character. Deliverables covered the full scope: brand identity, logo design, label artwork, and product mockups.

02 — Approach

From first sketch to shelf-ready identity

A structured five-phase creative process — from positioning and ideation through to final label artwork and production mockups.

01
Ideation & Sketch Exploration
Multiple sketch rounds exploring how Electron's "buzz that stays throughout the day" could become a visual mark — deliberately moving away from lightning bolts and neon chemicals toward something predatory and sustained.
02
Three Logo Variations
Three distinct concepts developed in Adobe Illustrator and evaluated against Electron's positioning, category context, and the visual demands of can label design — where a mark must read at close range and at shelf distance simultaneously.
03
The Final Mark
A leopard — claws first — tears through a dark background. Sharp geometric lines form an angular frame, creating tension between organic ferocity and hard-edged geometry. Near-black, orange, and white: maximum contrast on dark surfaces.
04
Colour Variant Development
The final mark developed across three colour variants, each rigorously evaluated for shelf impact, contrast, and emotional register — confirming the optimal palette direction before moving to label production.
05
Label Design & Mockups
The brand identity extended across the full can format in Adobe Illustrator, then rendered in realistic application contexts in Photoshop — evaluating proportion, wrap behaviour, and real-world visual impact before production.

A leopard breaking through is not a generic energy drink logo. It is a brand mark that tells you exactly what kind of product this is before you read a single word of copy.

  • An energy drink label design project typically begins with brand identity development — understanding the brand's positioning, personality, and target audience — before moving into logo design, colour exploration, label artwork, and product mockups. For Electron, First Launch handled the complete scope: from ideation sketch rounds through three logo variations and colour variants to final label design in Adobe Illustrator and product mockups in Adobe Photoshop.
  • We begin with positioning. A logo for an energy drink brand entering a competitive category needs to do specific visual work — it must be immediately legible on a can in hand and at distance on a shelf simultaneously. For Electron, that meant moving away from category defaults toward a more conceptually distinctive direction: exploring multiple sketch rounds before developing three refined logo concepts, each assessed against the brand's "sustained energy" positioning before selecting the final direction.
  • On a competitive energy drink shelf, standing out requires three things: immediate legibility, visual distinctiveness, and emotional charge within a fraction of a second. The brands that win have a clear brand mark, high contrast between the label and competing products, and a design language that communicates the brand's positioning without relying on explanation. Generic category conventions — neon colours, lightning bolts — no longer differentiate. A coherent, concept-driven identity does.
  • Label artwork for can application is produced in Adobe Illustrator as vector files, ensuring sharp output at any print scale. Product mockups are produced in Adobe Photoshop, rendering the label applied to the can in realistic presentation contexts. This combination allows evaluation of proportion, wrap behaviour, and real-world visual impact before going to production.
  • Yes. For Electron Energy Drink, First Launch managed the complete engagement: brand identity strategy, logo ideation, logo design across three variations, colour variant development, label artwork, and product mockups. Treating packaging as an expression of a coherent brand — rather than a label applied to an unnamed product — produces more distinctive, category-competitive results.
  • Label design refers specifically to the artwork applied to a product's surface — the logo, typography, colour, and graphic elements that appear on the can or bottle. Packaging design is a broader term that includes structural considerations such as the container format, materials, and print production requirements. For beverage brands like Electron, label design is the primary creative deliverable; the can format is standardised. First Launch's work covered full label artwork and product mockups within that format.
