Two label concepts. Two distinct visual identities. One coherent product family — designed for a home care brand competing on shelf.
Designing for an FMCG brand where shelf presence and immediate product clarity are the critical purchase drivers.
Varam Cipher is a home care and sanitizing brand under the Varam Group, producing products designed to keep homes clean, hygienic, and healthy. Available on Amazon, Cipher occupies the home care segment of the Varam portfolio — a category where shelf presence and immediate product clarity are critical purchase drivers for a consumer making a fast decision online or in-store.
The brief was to design product labels for Varam Cipher's odour neutralizer range — a product with two distinct variants requiring two distinct design directions. The first was a fragrance-forward variant; the second was an all-purpose variant with broader use case communication. The challenge was to create labels that communicated each variant's identity clearly and distinctly, while maintaining cohesion as a product family within the Cipher brand.
Every visual choice — colour, motif, layout — was derived from the product's purpose and its consumer's purchase logic.
Different enough to communicate each variant's purpose at a glance. Unified enough to read as a family when placed side by side.
The fragrance variant called for a design language rooted in botanical and floral visual cues — elements that communicate freshness, scent, and natural ingredients at a glance. Floral motifs were used throughout the label to visually reinforce the fragrance proposition before a consumer reads a single word of copy. Purple was chosen as the primary palette, carrying strong associations with lavender, fragrance, and premium personal and home care. The result is a label that feels soft, aromatic, and approachable — the right register for a product whose entire purpose is to make a space smell better.
The all-purpose variant required a different visual approach. Rather than a single fragrance cue, this variant needed to communicate versatility — that it works across multiple surfaces, spaces, and use cases in the home. The design used visual elements that directly referenced the product's range of applications. Orange was selected as the primary colour, drawn directly from the Varam Cipher brand palette — communicating energy, effectiveness, and practicality, while providing immediate visual differentiation from the purple fragrance variant.
Getting either direction wrong — variants too similar, or completely unrelated — undermines the product range's coherence and the consumer's confidence in the brand.
